Alois Nebel: My Life

“Railway tracks can take you places: to Lisbon or to Auschwitz, to your own past or even
to your doubts, the traces of what your parents, friends and enemies have left behind…”

Organised by the Czech Centre in London, this exhibition at The Riverside Studios Gallery in Hammersmith presents black and white cartoons inspired by Alois Nebel, the cult Czech graphic novel trilogy by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99, the first modern graphic novel to be published in the Czech Republic. With the 20th century as a background it provides the testimony of seemingly ordinary people, represented by Bily Potok´s stationmaster Alois Nebel, living on the outskirts of society, their lives affected for generations by Great History. Artist Jaromír 99 was inspired by the American comics of the 1950s, socialist realism and motifs from traditional paper cutouts, which remain a typical form of folk art in the Czech mountain region of Jeseník.

Jaromír 99 will also be appearing and taking part in the live Drawing Parade at Comica Comiket on Saturday November 10th.

Tickets: Free
Where: Riverside Studios Gallery, Crisp Rd, Hammersmith, W6 9R
When: November 1 to November 18, 2012
