Joe Sacco: The Great War and the Battle of the Somme

The Great War: Joe Sacco discusses the Battle of the Somme

Joe Sacco discusses the Great War, and in particular, the events of July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, when almost 20,000 British soldiers were killed, and another 40,000 were wounded, as depicted in his Graphic Documentary, The Great War.

Joe Sacco is one of the world’s great cartoonist-journalists, widely hailed as the creator of war reportage comics.

He will be making this exclusive London speaking engagement as a feature of the Tenth Comica Festival 2013, to talk in depth about how he achieves his acclaimed comics journalism, covering conflicts in Bosnia, Palestine, Iraq and elsewhere. He will be in conversation with Pat Mills, the British comics writer acclaimed for his WWI serial Charley’s War and his politically charged series for Crisis and other projects.

The Great War, a 24-foot-long wordless panorama, is published October 10th 2013 by Jonathan Cape.

Printed on fine accordion-fold paper and packaged in a deluxe hardcover slipcase with a 16-page accompanying booklet, The Great War is a landmark work in Sacco’s illustrious career, and makes visceral one of the bloodiest days in history.

His other books include: Palestine, which received the American Book Award; Safe Area: Goražde, which won the Eisner Award, and was named a New York Times notable book, and Time magazine’s best comic-book of 2000.

Thanks to the brilliant support of the first Lakes International Comic Art Festival (Kendal: October 18th to 20th), publishers Jonathan Cape, and Central Saint Martins - University of the Arts London, for their help in presenting this event.
