Spring Comica Comiket: Independent Comics Fair

Saturday April 21st 2012 is the day! Following the huge success of last November’s Comica Comiket in the spectacular Great Hall at the Bishopsgate Institute near Liverpool Street station in London, we’re organising a brand new Comica Comiket for the Spring, a one-day comics and art fair - bigger and better than ever, offering the best of British creators, publishers, small presses, graphic artists and suppliers under one roof, and admission is free from 11am to 6pm. Throughout the day, John Allison, Darryl Cunningham, Tom Gauld, Simone Lia, Maarten Vande Wiele and Andi Watson are among the top artists who will be taking part on stage in the Comica Drawing Parade, with their live artworks and demos projected on a giant screen.
Here’s what a few participants thought of last November’s Comiket:
“I thought Comiket was fantastic. It was probably my favourite convention experience so far, due to the abundance of exciting people and publishers in attendance and the live drawing is a brilliant extra. It left me really excited about comics. Looking forward to the next one.”
Luke Pearson
“A grand day out in Bishopsgate: After five years of attending Comica’s Comikets, the event has finally come of age. Though previously held in some wonderful locations such as the ICA and the Pump House in Battersea Park, this is the first time that the combination of venue and location has worked so well to bring in the kind of footfall that I’m sure made every exhibitor’s day worthwhile. With plenty of passing trade, free entry and a magnificent continuous large-screen live drawing display kept visitors in the hall.”
Francesca Cassavetti, Fabtoons
“It’s the egalitarian feel of an event like Comiket that reignites that feeling of joy about comics for me that the cynical shenanigans of the bigger commercial publishers have done their best to erase. It was that tangible lack of cynicism, and an all-pervading sense of diversity, that were the admirable hallmarks of an event where everyone attending was focused primarily on the same shared goal: selling their personal vision of the very best of what comics can be. A tiptop day on every level and an experience I look forward to replicating at the next Comiket in 2012.”
