Alison Bechdel

The American cartoonist Alison Bechdel has gone from a much-loved lesbian chronicler in Dykes to Watch Out For to a celebrated graphic novelist. Laydeez Do Comics and Comica Festival are delighted to welcome Alison Bechdel for a very special evening. She will be talking about and reading from her compelling graphic memoirs published by Jonathan Cape: Fun Home, selected as ‘Book of the Year’ in 2006 by Time Magazine, and her latest, Are You My Mother?. In both, she explores her complex relationships with her parents with sensitivity and insight.

Alison will be signing her books and there will also be a UK premiere screening of The Paper Mirror, Charissa King-O’Brien’s compelling documentary about Alison Bechdel and the portrait painted of her by Riva Lehrer. See the trailer below:

In association with Laydeez Do Comics, the first UK graphic novel forum led by women. Its focus is on comics work based on life narrative and the drama of the everyday. LDC was launched in July 2009 by the illustrator and author of graphic novel Billy, Me & You, Nicola Streeten, and the artist, researcher and co-curator of Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women, Sarah Lightman. They shared an interest in comics and graphic novels that were not about superheroes but were focused on the domestic and autobiographical. They felt that they couldn’t be alone and they were right! LDC now has a worldwide presence with meetings held in San Francisco, New York, Toronto, as well as closer to home in Bristol and Leeds. Artists, academics, publishers and fans from around the world are invited to speak at LDC. The evenings are a platform for people to test new works and ideas, where emerging artists present their work alongside more established practitioners, in an inspiring and friendly atmosphere. All are welcome and wine, beer and home-baked cakes are served too!

To find out more about LDC and to hear podcasts and read the blogs of previous meetings, please see our website.
